CHAPTER 15
Leaving the interception point behind, Eva’s large transport went onwards towards the escarpment and the caterers’ headquarters. Leaning against the solid upholstery of the seat, the envoy slipped in an out of sleep, his body reacting to the beatings it had sustained, but Ifan, glancing over from time to time, seemed satisfied, and if he saw the interlocked hands he said nothing.
After about three hours, as the light began to fade, Eva called a halt.
“Teth-een, my maid, come to be with your brother for a short while. There are things I would say to the envoy before his grand affairs roll over us completely and we find ourselves again among many people.”
In the rear of the vehicle, Borto was lying on a thin mattress, warmly covered and with his wounded leg slightly raised. He was still feverish, but he was nearer to consciousness than he had been. Courvenier’s medics had treated him in time; he wouldn’t die, and what Eva had done for him had brought his body back from deep trauma.
Tethyn sat by his side, looking out of the window. In the distance she could see the lights of the spaceport beginning to appear low on the horizon, and she thought of the time, three days ago, when they had been a background for their departure. No visit to Pengethlyn left her unaffected, but this one had disturbed her life fundamentally, and she wondered where she might be going from here. Things were not going to be as they had been, and it was at this moment that she began to think that she might not return to the survey camp in the immediate future.
Borto’s eyes opened. “Tethyn! Where are we? I feel very funny. Have I missed much?”
Smiling with relief, Tethyn squeezed his hand. “We’re in the back of Eva’s transport. Somehow Father got to know what had happened and she came to get us away. You’ve missed quite a lot, but we’ll tell you about it when we get back.”
“I have a weird impression that I saw Ifan.”
“You did. He’s in the front, talking to Eva and Lewis.”
“It wasn’t very clever, was it, getting myself shot?”
“I don’t think Ifan saw it like that. It was just something that happened, and it certainly got things going, but we’re safe, and Lewis knows who’s after him now, which apparently is a very good thing.”
Borto fell back into a light sleep, but he looked a lot better and his temperature was falling.
Ahead of them the dim lights of the headquarters appeared. As they drew into the yard Tethyn saw the three drifters that Rayanna had guided, another, clearly the one that had brought Constanta and Lady Seaton from Pengethlyn, and two familiar city vehicles; her father’s, one with his driver in the front seat. The back door opened and Eva appeared, flanked by Ifan and Fingal.
Ifan climbed in, and politely handed Tethyn out. “Bring the First Peer back quickly,” he said before closing the door. Speechlessly, Tethyn looked at Eva.
